A Little Bit About Joséfa

Hello my dear friend, thank you so much for taking the time to stop by my site. My name is Joséfa David and I am a fashion and fabric designer with dreams of a sustainable future.

My passion is designing and creating uniquely beautiful yet versatile clothing and hair accessories made from sustainable fabrics. I incorporate one of a kind prints and patterns inspired by the visual wonders found in nature. My love affair with fashion began at a young age. Growing up in a family of eight in rural Quebec, a spark was ignited after watching the film "Anne of Green Gables". I related so much to her character that suddenly, her desires became mine; I had suddenly discovered how I wanted to live my life, adventurous, stylish, and full of heart.

Much Like Anne, I dreamt of owning a romantic white dress with delicate, puffy sleeves but being from a family of modest means I couldn't even consider asking my parents to buy me something so indulgent! My great-aunt Therese, however, granted my wish during her annual summer visit by bringing me the most gorgeous white dress adorned with the puffy sleeves I had desired! I do believe that I was the happiest eight year old in Quebec that summer! From that moment on, fashion and design became my world.

As I grew up in adolescence, and then into a young woman, I continued to dream of becoming a fashion designer, while at the same time pursuing an education in Psychology and Anthropology. But it wasn't until a chance encounter with my great-aunt Ivette, who dazzled me with her enchanting memories of life in Haute Couture fashion, that gave me the inspiration I needed to follow my heart.

It was in 2013 that my pursuit of design led me to discover the dark and uncomfortable truth behind the world of fast fashion. That year the Dhaka garment factory in Bangladesh collapsed taking  1,134 innocent lives and injuring 2,500 people. I was sick to my stomach to learn that this was just considered just another casualty in the fashion world and knew I had to take a stand. I would do everything in my power to use fashion as a force for good.

With a clear vision of my future in mind, I soon moved to Ontario to be with my partner, where over the next two years I began construction of my workshop and started to build relationships with local suppliers and sourcing sustainable fabrics and materials.

Progress was being made when sadly the source of my greatest inspiration, my mother, Esther, succumbed to her two-year fight with cancer before being able to share in my achievements. Picking up the pieces of my broken heart, I felt my mother's encouragement to move forward. To this day she continues to inspire me and will always be an integral part of my accomplishments.

In the fall of 2019, I officially launched my first line of Joséfa David products and committed myself completely to sustainable and ethical fair-trade fashion. I hope you can feel the heart and soul that goes into each and every one of my pieces and know that by choosing to support ethical fashion you are choosing to support social and environmental justice. I thank you deeply.

With love,
